Play Cosmic Wars (Japan) Online
You command Vic Viper and friends in slow, tense battles across grid maps—no reflexes needed, just cold calculation while that familiar Gradius soundtrack plays. Feels bizarre at first, then brilliant when your flanking maneuver wipes their fleet.

Cosmic Wars came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991, developed and published by Konami. It was one of those late NES releases that tried something a little different, a turn based strategy game set in space at a time when action and platformers still dominated the console.
You control a small fleet of ships, including the Vic Viper, moving them across grid based maps to engage enemy forces. The goal is to eliminate all opposing units on each screen. Movement and combat are strictly turn based; you plot your moves, then watch as the enemy responds. The pacing is slow and thoughtful, demanding careful positioning and anticipation of enemy actions. It feels like solving a tactical puzzle with each new encounter, and the satisfaction comes from outmaneuvering opponents through planning rather than quick reflexes.
