Ditch cops in stolen cars with janky controls, pull messy heists, and watch everything go wrong in that perfect old-school DOS way—no mercy, just neon and chaos.

I picked up Crime Does Not Pay as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games collection, though it doesn't seem to have a specific release number attached. I'm not sure who originally developed or published it, but it fits right in with that era of early PC gaming where ambition often outpaced polish. It's one of those games that feels like it was made in someone's basement, full of rough edges and a kind of stubborn charm that was common before big studios took over.
You play as a small-time criminal trying to pull off a series of heists, moving from location to location in a top-down view. The main objective is to steal valuables and escape before the police show up, but the controls are deliberately clumsy, making every action feel risky and uncoordinated. Signature mechanics include evading cops in stolen vehicles that handle poorly and managing a limited inventory of tools that often fail at the worst moments. The pacing is frantic, and the difficulty is unforgiving, with mistakes compounding quickly into total failure. It feels like barely controlled chaos from start to finish.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
