Game Overview

Croket! Great: Toki no Boukensha came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2003, developed by Konami. It was part of that era where portable games were really stretching their legs, offering more involved adventures you could take anywhere. The game is based on a manga and anime series, so it had a built-in look and feel that was colorful and a bit goofy, fitting right in on the GBA screen.

You control Croket, a young boy armed with a comically large spoon, as he explores levels, fights off oddball enemies, and hunts for treasure. The main goal is to progress through each stage, which often involves navigating environmental puzzles and avoiding traps. A couple of its signature mechanics include using that spoon to both attack foes and deflect projectiles back at them, and dealing with Mimic chests that you have to hit just right to open without getting bitten. The pacing is brisk, with levels that encourage quick thinking rather than slow deliberation, and the difficulty comes from timing your attacks and learning enemy patterns. It feels like a lighthearted, chaotic scramble from start to finish.
