Crystalis on the Game Boy Color came out in 2000, published by Nintendo. It was a late release for the system, arriving just before the Game Boy Advance, and it felt like a substantial adventure for a handheld at the time. You control a hero who awakens with no memory in a world shattered by a great war. Your goal is to find four elemental towers and stop a powerful evil from reshaping reality. You explore the land screen by screen, fighting monsters with a variety of swords, each imbued with a different element like fire or wind. You also use magic spells and special charged attacks to overcome obstacles and enemies. The pacing is deliberate, with plenty of backtracking and challenging dungeons that require careful use of your tools. It feels like a thoughtful, exploratory journey where every new ability opens up another part of the map.
