You roll up a ragtag crew of medieval Germans—knights, thieves, alchemists—and roam 15th-century Europe, where every town remembers your crimes or good deeds. Real-time fights get messy when your aging priest tries to keep up with the young brawlers.

Darklands came out in 1992 from MicroProse, a developer known for deep strategy and simulation titles on MS-DOS. It was a time when games were willing to demand a lot from the player, and this one fit right in with its dense, text-heavy approach to a historical setting.
You control a custom party of up to four characters, like a pious priest or a streetwise thief, navigating a semi-open map of the Holy Roman Empire. The main goal is to build your reputation by completing quests, hunting down occult threats, and ultimately confronting a grand evil. Key mechanics include real-time, pause-enabled combat, detailed character creation with skills that improve through use, and an alchemy system for crafting potions and explosives. The pacing is deliberate, often slow, and the difficulty is unrelenting, with permanent death a constant possibility. It feels like carefully managing a fragile, breathing company of adventurers whose survival depends on every cautious decision.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
