Game Overview

Defenders of the Earth came out on the Amiga in 1990, developed by Enigma Variations and published by Hi-Tec Software. It was a side-scrolling action game based on the King Features comic and cartoon series, arriving at a time when licensed games were common but often hit or miss. The game let you step into the roles of four heroes: Flash Gordon, the Phantom, Mandrake, and Lothar, each with their own abilities and animations.

You control one hero at a time, switching between them to navigate levels filled with Ming’s soldiers, traps, and environmental obstacles. Your main goal is to rescue kidnapped children held in Ming’s fortress, moving screen by screen through jungles, caves, and enemy bases. Each character fights differently; Flash uses a laser pistol, the Phantom relies on his fists and agility, Mandrake casts spells, and Lothar swings a powerful club. The pacing is deliberate, with careful jumps and enemy patterns to learn, and the difficulty can be unforgiving if you rush. Playing it feels like a methodical test of patience and timing, where every screen cleared brings a small but tangible sense of progress.
