Demolition Man on the Genesis is one of those weirdly fun movie tie-ins that actually gets the vibe right. You play as John Spartan, the cop who gets frozen for 30 years after a botched arrest, only to wake up in a squeaky-clean future where your old nemesis Simon Phoenix is causing chaos again.
The gameplay’s a mix of side-scrolling action and top-down shooting—kinda like if Contra and Smash TV had a baby. You’re blasting through waves of cryocons (basically future goons) with your pistol, grabbing shotgun or magnum pickups when you’re lucky. The grenades are a nice touch—just tap the button and Spartan chucks one without interrupting your shooting.
Every level ends with a boss fight against Phoenix himself, and the Sega CD version throws in actual movie clips between stages. It’s not deep, but the action’s fast, the weapons feel punchy, and the whole thing has that cheesy ‘90s action movie charm.
