Demon Sword came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, published by Taito. It was one of those many action platformers that filled the library, a game you might rent on a Friday night hoping for a solid weekend of monster slashing. You play as a warrior on a quest to defeat the Dark Fiend, and the whole adventure is built around putting a magical, shattered blade back together.
You control your character through side-scrolling levels, moving screen by screen and clearing each area of enemies before proceeding. Your main weapon is a sword, which you can swing, and you also have a bow for attacking from a distance. The core objective is to collect the scattered pieces of the Demon Sword, which are hidden throughout the stages, often guarded by a boss. The game moves at a brisk pace, but the difficulty can spike unexpectedly, especially during boss encounters. It feels like a straightforward, sometimes punishing race to rebuild your power and see the next stage.
