Game Overview

Desert Strike on the Amiga drops you straight into the cockpit of an Apache helicopter with the world on the brink of war. Some warlord named Kilbaba’s gone rogue, and suddenly it’s your job to stop him before he starts launching nukes. No pressure, right?

You’re flying over this sprawling desert map from a tilted overhead view—close enough to spot enemy tanks rolling in, but just distant enough that you’ll panic when missiles start locking onto you. The Apache handles like a brick with rotors at first, but once you get the hang of weaving between anti-aircraft fire, it feels surprisingly nimble. Your arsenal’s simple but brutal: a machine gun for shredding infantry, and two missile types—one for precision strikes, the other for when you really need to erase a bunker from existence.

What I didn’t expect was how tense the rescue missions would be. You’ve got to scoop up POWs stranded in enemy territory while dodging turrets, then haul them back to base before your fuel gauge hits zero. Run out of gas or take too many hits, and it’s game over—but finding an ammo dump or armor crate in the middle of the dunes feels like stumbling onto an oasis. The whole thing’s this weird mix of methodical planning and chaotic improvisation, especially when a stray missile sends your helicopter spinning like a top. Just try not to crash into your own explosions.

It’s one of those games where failure stings, but nailing a perfect run makes you feel like an action hero. The Amiga’s chunky explosions and that synth-heavy soundtrack somehow make the desert feel even hotter.
