Game Overview

Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness came out for the PlayStation Portable in 2007, developed by Nippon Ichi Software. It was part of that wave of deep, quirky strategy RPGs that found a natural home on handhelds, letting you grind for hours whether you were on the couch or somewhere else. The game is actually an enhanced port of the original Disgaea from the PlayStation 2, so it brought a pretty substantial experience to the small screen.

You control Laharl, a demon prince trying to take back his throne after waking up from a long nap. The game plays out in grid based tactical battles where positioning and elevation matter a lot. You can pick up and throw your own units (or enemies) to reposition them or set up combo attacks, and one of the big draws is the Item World, randomized dungeons inside any piece of gear where you fight through floors to make your equipment stronger. The dialogue is full of sarcasm and fourth wall breaks, and the overall tone is light even when the difficulty spikes. It feels satisfying to break the game's systems wide open through clever grinding and absurd level caps.
