You play as a spoiled demon prince reclaiming his throne by tossing allies across battlefields and diving into weapon dungeons to power up—all while the dialogue roasts everyone mercilessly. Etna’s bonus story is pure chaos.
Game Overview
Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness is one of those games where you start off thinking, "Okay, demon prince wants his throne back, standard stuff"—and then suddenly you're throwing penguin-shaped explosives at enemies and leveling up spells by grinding through randomly generated dungeons inside your own weapons. Yeah, it gets weird.
The turn-based combat feels like chess if chess let you pick up and throw your own units across the map (which, by the way, is hilarious when you yeet a healer into the middle of a fight). The story’s full of dumb, over-the-top humor—Laharl’s a brat, Etna’s terrifying, and the dialogue’s surprisingly sharp for a game about hell being run by idiots.
This PSP version adds Etna’s "what if she won?" side story, which is worth playing just to see her try (and fail) to be a competent ruler. The PC port smooths out some of the rough edges, but honestly, the charm’s in the old-school sprites and ridiculous numbers—you’ll hit level 9999 and still find new ways to break the game.
If you like strategy RPGs but wish they were less serious and more willing to let you summon a demonic penguin, this is your game.
