Disgaea DS came out in 2008 for the Nintendo DS, developed by Nippon Ichi Software. It was a port of the original PlayStation 2 game, bringing its particular brand of strategy RPG mechanics to a handheld platform during a time when the DS library was incredibly diverse. It fit right in, offering a deep, complex experience you could take anywhere.
You control a party of characters, primarily the arrogant demon prince Laharl, on a grid based battlefield. The main goal is to reclaim his throne, which involves fighting through story missions and an absurdly deep optional dungeon called the Item World. Key mechanics include throwing your own units to reposition them, setting off colored Geo Panels for massive chain reactions, and using the Senate to bribe demon senators for better items or perks. The pacing is methodical, and the difficulty can spike, but grinding is part of the fun; you can level up your characters, their weapons, and even the items themselves to staggering degrees. It feels like solving a chaotic puzzle where the rules are meant to be broken.
