E.V.O. came out for the Super Nintendo in 1992, developed by Almanic. It was one of those games that felt completely different from anything else on the system at the time, quietly doing its own thing while everyone else was focused on platformers and RPGs.
You control a creature on a journey through the history of life on Earth, starting as a simple fish. Your main goal is to survive and evolve by defeating other creatures and consuming their meat to earn evolution points. You spend those points to modify your body part by part; you can grow stronger jaws, develop armored plates, add legs, or even experiment with wings. The game plays out across side scrolling action stages and an overworld map, with a steady pace that encourages experimentation over pure speed. It feels like a strange, hands on biology lesson where you get to build your own mistakes and successes.
