Game Overview

Eek! The Cat came out for the Super Nintendo in 1994, developed by Ocean Software. It was one of those licensed platformers that showed up a lot on the system, based on the Saturday morning cartoon about a well meaning but clumsy purple cat. The game fits right in with other mid tier SNES releases from that era, colorful and straightforward but not especially ambitious.

You control Eek, moving through side scrolling stages that each have their own silly premise, like stopping a giant baby from wrecking the city or sneaking past sleeping zoo animals. The main goal is just to survive each chaotic scenario, often by finding keys or reaching an exit while hazards and enemies close in. You can jump on some foes, but a lot of the time you're just dodging obstacles or using context sensitive items, like a slingshot or a vacuum cleaner, to clear a path. The pacing is frantic, with things often going wrong in rapid succession, and the difficulty can feel cheap in spots due to some awkward hit detection. It feels like you're barely holding things together as you play, which honestly fits the character pretty well.
