Eien no Filerna (or Eternal Filena if you're playing the fan translation) is one of those SNES RPGs that slipped under the radar—probably because it never left Japan back in the day. You play as Filena, a princess forced into gladiator battles, and right from the start, the game doesn’t pull punches. No slow farming village intro here—you’re thrown into the arena almost immediately, dodging swords and trying not to die.

The combat’s classic turn-based stuff, but what hooked me was the story. Filena’s not just fighting for glory; there’s this whole web of politics, hidden royalty, and rebellion brewing in the background. It’s darker than your usual SNES fantasy RPG, more Game of Thrones than Dragon Quest. And Filena herself? Refreshingly no-nonsense—she’s got more in common with a survivalist than a Disney princess.
