I picked up The Emperor's New Groove on Game Boy Color back around 2000, a time when licensed games were a real mixed bag. It was developed by Sandbox Studios and published by Ubisoft, which gave me a little hope it might be decent. The Game Boy Color was full of platformers and puzzle adventures then, and this one fit right into that familiar, comfortable space.

You control Kuzco the llama and Pacha the peasant, switching between them to solve environmental puzzles. Kuzco can headbutt enemies and break certain blocks, while Pacha is stronger and can push heavy objects like boulders. The main goal is to work your way through each stage, avoiding traps and outsmarting Yzma’s henchmen. The pacing is fairly relaxed, with more emphasis on figuring out how to use each character’s ability than on twitch reflexes. It feels clever and lighthearted, like the movie translated into a series of small, interactive jokes.
