Game Overview

Famicom Bunko: Hajimari no Mori is one of those SNES games that feels like it shouldn’t exist—in the best way possible. It’s basically a pixelated library where every book is a tiny, self-contained adventure. Some are goofy little fairy tales, others have this weirdly melancholic vibe, and all of them ooze that warm 16-bit aesthetic.

You’d think a game built around reading would feel slow, but the way it mixes light RPG mechanics with interactive storytelling keeps things engaging. One minute you’re flipping through pages, the next you’re solving simple puzzles or making choices that actually matter. It’s got that same dreamy, experimental energy as some of the quirkier Square Enix titles from the era, but with a cozier, bookish twist.

Never officially released outside Japan, which is a shame—but if you’ve ever wanted a game that feels like curling up with a stack of well-worn storybooks, this is it. The music alone is worth the trip.
