Game Overview

Family Trainer: Manhattan Police came out in 1987 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by Bandai. It was part of a wave of games that tried to get players off the couch, using the Family Trainer mat controller to turn gameplay into something more physical. This one puts you in the shoes of a New York City police officer, tasked with cleaning up the streets in a very hands-on way.

You control an officer who must chase down criminals, avoid traffic, and occasionally jump over obstacles across several city screens. The main objective is to catch a set number of thieves within a time limit, moving from block to block. Signature mechanics include running in place on the mat to move your character faster, and timing your steps to avoid cars and gaps in the pavement. The pacing is relentless; one misstep can cost you precious seconds or a life. It feels like a frantic, sweaty race against the clock where your own stamina becomes part of the challenge.
