Faxanadu came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1989, developed by Hudson Soft. It was part of that wave of side-scrolling action RPGs that filled the gap before the 16-bit era really took off, offering a mix of exploration and combat that felt substantial for an 8-bit title.
You control an elf-like adventurer returning to a blighted homeland, tasked with cleansing a mystical tree to save the world. You explore the land screen by screen, fighting monsters with a sword that can be upgraded (though sometimes downgraded by certain enemies), and gathering gold to buy better gear and magic. The pacing is deliberate, with backtracking and careful resource management; the difficulty can be punishing if you rush. It feels like piecing together a somber, cryptic story through cautious movement and tense combat.
