Faxanadu is one of those weird, moody NES RPGs that feels like it shouldn’t exist—but I’m so glad it does. You start off in this crumbling fantasy town where everyone speaks in cryptic riddles, and before long you’re jumping across floating platforms, fighting off weird bug monsters, and slowly piecing together why the world’s water supply is turning people into stone. The controls are a little stiff (it is 1987), but the atmosphere is thick enough to cut with a sword.
This version’s been tweaked with some graphical upgrades, so the sprites look sharper and the backgrounds pop a bit more. Still has that eerie synth soundtrack, though—the kind that burrows into your brain and stays there for days.
