Game Overview
Remember that weird, moody NES game where you play as an elf climbing a giant tree? Faxanadu is this strange mix of side-scrolling action and light RPG elements that somehow works. You come back to your hometown to find everything's gone to hell—meteors are falling, dwarves are attacking, and the water's running out. Typical hero stuff.
What I love is how each area feels distinct—creepy bogs with this droning soundtrack, claustrophobic caves, these medieval towns where everyone's just given up. You'll be jumping gaps, stabbing zombies with progressively better swords, and hoarding gold like a miser because that plate armor isn't cheap. The password system (they call it a "mantra") ties into your character level, which is a neat touch—die too much and you'll restart with less cash.
It's janky in that classic NES way, but there's something haunting about it. Those pixelated dwarves still give me nightmares.
