Faxanadu came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, developed by Hudson Soft. It was part of that wave of side-scrolling action games that tried to blend exploration with RPG elements, standing out with its somber tone and a world built around a massive, decaying tree.
You control an elf-like adventurer returning to a homeland choked by a poisonous mist. Your goal is to climb the World Tree, defeat the evil causing the blight, and restore life. You explore the world screen by screen, fighting off monsters with a sword that can be upgraded, and later a bow. You collect money and gems to buy better equipment, keys to open doors, and magical runes that grant new abilities. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty can be punishing, especially with limited continues. It feels like a solitary, weighty journey through a place that has truly fallen apart.
