FIFA 08 on the Nintendo DS came out in 2007, developed by EA Sports. It was one of the more polished soccer games on the handheld at the time, offering a portable version of the console experience without too many compromises. The DS was full of experimental titles, but this one stuck to the basics and did them well.
You control a team of eleven players, passing, shooting, and tackling your way to victory. The main objective is to outscore your opponent within a match or work through a season. Signature mechanics include using the touch screen for free kicks and penalties, where you swipe to aim and add curve, and managing substitutions and tactics on the fly. The pacing is brisk, matches are short, and the difficulty can spike against better teams. It feels responsive and satisfying when your through balls connect and your shots find the net.
