Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance was my first proper dive into tactical RPGs, and honestly? It ruined other strategy games for me. You start as Ike, this green mercenary who gets dragged into a war after rescuing a princess—typical fantasy stuff, until the politics and betrayals start piling up. The story’s got that classic Fire Emblem drama, with animated cutscenes that actually make you care when someone inevitably dies (perma-death is brutal, but it makes every decision matter).

Battles play out on these gorgeous 3D maps where positioning is everything. You’ll spend turns agonizing over whether to send your archer forward to pick off that mage or hold back to avoid cavalry charges. The weapon triangle (swords beat axes, axes beat lances, etc.) seems simple at first, but then you realize your lance user’s terrible resistance stat means they’ll get melted by magic no matter what. Some maps force you to escort NPCs or seize thrones under tight turn limits, and failing because your healer got ambushed is… emotionally taxing.

What stuck with me were the characters—like Gatrie, the armor knight who won’t shut up about women, or Soren, the snarky mage with a mysterious past. They bicker in camp between battles, gain support bonuses if you pair them up, and if they die? Gone forever. It’s stressful in the best way. The game’s not shy about throwing curveballs, either; just wait until you hit the desert map with fog of war.

If you like tactics games with actual stakes and a story that doesn’t feel like an afterthought, this one’s a gem. Just don’t get too attached to anyone.
