Game Overview

Fire Emblem on the GBA was my first taste of the series, and man, it hooked me fast. You start off leading this ragtag group of knights, mages, and archers—some noble, some just in it for the gold—escorting a princess back to her kingdom. Sounds simple, until you realize every forest and castle hide enemies waiting to ambush you.

The turn-based battles feel like chess with way higher stakes. Lose a unit? They’re gone forever. I learned that the hard way when my favorite cavalier got speared in chapter 3 and I had to live with that regret. The weapon triangle (swords beat axes, axes beat lances, lances beat swords) keeps fights tense but fair—unless you forget to check enemy gear, which I definitely did. More than once.

And the permadeath isn’t just for drama. It makes every decision matter, whether you’re tossing a healer into the fray or sacrificing a unit to save the mission. By the end, your squad feels like family—the kind you’d actually cry over if they died. Classic Fire Emblem, right down to the pixelated battle animations.
