Fossil Fighters came out for the Nintendo DS in 2008, developed by Nintendo and Red Entertainment. It was part of that wave of DS games that really leaned into the touch screen, offering something a little different from the usual RPGs or platformers on the system.
You play as a young Fossil Fighter who cleans and revives dinosaur fossils, called Vivosaurs, to use in battle. The main goal is to become the champion by exploring dig sites screen by screen, carefully cleaning fossils with the stylus to reveal their quality, and then assembling a team of three Vivosaurs for turn-based fights. The combat relies heavily on type advantages and positioning, since your party is split into front and back rows, and the pacing is fairly relaxed outside of boss fights. It feels satisfying to slowly build a powerful team from the rocks you personally uncover.
