Play Freeway Online
Dodge cars and trucks as you help a chicken cross a busy highway in this fast-paced Atari classic.
Freeway came out in 1981 for the Atari 2600, developed by David Crane and published by Activision. It was one of those simple, straightforward games that felt typical for the era, built around a single clear idea rather than complex stories or graphics. You didn't need a manual to understand it; you just picked up the joystick and went.
You control a chicken trying to cross a multi-lane highway filled with cars and trucks. Your goal is to reach the other side as many times as possible before time runs out. The main mechanics involve moving your chicken up and down to avoid oncoming traffic, timing your dashes between vehicles, and sometimes getting hit and sent back to the start. The pacing is quick, and the difficulty comes from the increasing speed and density of cars in later rounds. It feels frantic but satisfying when you successfully weave through the chaos.
