From The Abyss (Venom) is one of those DS dungeon crawlers that somehow flew under the radar—which is a shame, because it’s got this weird, grungy charm. You start off in this murky underworld, and within minutes you’re hacking away at floating eyeball monsters and skeletons with whatever weapon you grabbed first (I went with a sword, but the spear felt better later).
The combat’s fast, almost frantic—no turn-based stuff here. You’re dodging, slashing, and chugging potions while weird little imps try to flank you. And the dungeons? They’re not just corridors; they twist and loop back in ways that make you actually pay attention to the map.
What surprised me was how much you can tweak your character. Not just stats, but gear and abilities that actually change how you play. Took me a few floors to realize I could stack fire damage on my attacks, and suddenly those poison-resistant slugs weren’t so annoying.
It’s got that ‘one more floor’ pull, especially when you spot a chest just out of reach behind some cracked walls. Just watch out for the bosses—they don’t mess around.
