If you grew up with the early One Piece days and still have a soft spot for Game Boy Color RPGs, this one’s a weird little time capsule. You start with just Luffy, punching his way through random pirates in turn-based fights that feel straight out of a Dragon Quest knockoff—but in a good way? The real fun kicks in when you start gathering the crew, one by one. Zoro shows up swinging three swords (somehow), Nami’s stealing everything not nailed down, and Usopp’s… well, trying his best.
The pixel art’s surprisingly expressive for a GBC game—Buggy the Clown’s nose alone is a masterpiece—and the battles are simple but punchy. It’s janky in that late-’90s way (expect some questionable enemy spawns), but there’s charm in how faithfully it sticks to the East Blue arc. Also, no microtransactions, just you versus the Marines, which feels downright revolutionary now. Not the deepest RPG, but a solid excuse to revisit Luffy’s dumber, stretchier beginnings.
