Game Overview

I picked up The Proud Family: Volume 1 for the Game Boy Advance back in 2005, a time when handhelds were pushing what portable media could do. Majesco published it, and it was one of those oddball releases that tried to turn the GBA into a tiny TV. It wasn't really a game, more like a portable DVD player that ate AA batteries for breakfast.

You don't control a character so much as you navigate menus to play episodes. The main objective is just to watch; you select an episode from a list, sit back, and let the pixelated animation roll. The compression is heavy, making everything look a little fuzzy and blocky, and the audio comes through tinny on the GBA's speaker. It's a straightforward experience with no real challenge or interaction beyond pressing buttons to pause or skip. Playing it feels like watching a favorite show through a dense fog, a curious artifact from when we tried to make our game systems do everything.
