Game Overview

Game & Watch Gallery came out for the Game Boy in 1997, a Nintendo release that bundled together several of their old LCD handheld games from the 80s. It was a clever way to bring those simple, single-screen challenges to a portable system that was still thriving with more complex adventures. You got a mix of the original black and white versions and colorful, modern remakes featuring Mario and his friends, which gave the whole package a nice sense of history and refresh at the same time.

You control different characters depending on the game; in Fire, for example, you move Mario left and right to catch people jumping from a burning building, while in Octopus, you guide a diver to collect treasure while avoiding enemy tentacles. The main objective is always to survive as long as possible and rack up a high score by timing your movements precisely. Signature mechanics include reacting to falling objects, managing limited screen space, and keeping a steady rhythm as the speed gradually increases. The pacing is quick and demanding, with mistakes costing you lives instantly, but nailing a long run feels satisfyingly sharp and focused.
