Play Ganbare! Daiku no Gen-san (Japan) Online
Smash through construction sites, take down enemies with your hammer, and rescue your girlfriend in this quirky platformer.
Ganbare! Daiku no Gen-san came out for the Super Nintendo in 1993, developed by Irem. It was part of that wave of quirky Japanese action-platformers that never made it overseas, full of oddball charm and specific cultural humor. You play as Gen, a carpenter with a big hammer and an even bigger attitude, trying to rescue his kidnapped girlfriend from a rival construction company.
You move through side-scrolling stages, mostly construction sites and enemy hideouts, using your hammer to attack foes and interact with the environment. The main goal is straightforward: get to the end of each level, defeat the boss, and move on. Signature mechanics include using your hammer to smash enemies and break certain blocks, as well as riding on floating nails you've hammered into walls to reach higher areas. The game has a fast, sometimes unforgiving pace, with hazards and enemies coming at you from all directions. It feels like a cheerful, slightly unhinged scramble from start to finish.
