Konami released Ganbare Goemon 2: Kiteretsu Shougun Magginesu on the Super Nintendo in 1993, a time when the console was packed with inventive platformers and action games. You control either Goemon or his sidekick Ebisumaru, navigating side-scrolling stages filled with quirky enemies, bottomless pits, and occasional shooter segments on foot or inside giant robots. The main goal involves traveling across a map of Japan, clearing stages to gather items and eventually confront the shogun. Signature mechanics include using Goemon's pipe to attack or as a pogo stick for extra height, riding a giant robotic cat for screen-clearing attacks, and switching between characters to use their unique abilities in certain situations. The pacing is brisk, with some tricky jumps and enemy patterns, but it rarely feels unfair. Playing it feels like taking a cheerful, unpredictable tour through a mythologized past.
