Gauntlet II came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, published by Tengen. It was part of that wave of arcade-style games that made the NES a great machine for playing with friends, offering a direct, cooperative dungeon crawl without a lot of story to get in the way.
You control one of four fantasy characters—a warrior, valkyrie, wizard, or elf—each with their own strengths, like the valkyrie's useful shield. You move from one single-screen room to the next, fighting endless waves of ghosts, grunts, and demons that spawn from generators you must destroy. Your main goal is simply to survive, collecting keys to open doors, grabbing treasure for points, and desperately hunting for food to keep your health from draining away. The game is fast and relentless, with monsters appearing constantly, and it feels like a frantic race against your own dwindling life meter as much as the enemies on screen. It's a straightforward, noisy, and wonderfully stressful experience to share with others.
