Pick a hero, smash skeletons by the dozen, and chase loot through chaotic dungeons—way better with friends, especially when you unlock those extra N64-exclusive levels. The Valkyrie’s spin attack never gets old, and leveling up actually makes grinding feel worth it.
Gauntlet Legends on N64 is one of those rare arcade ports that actually adds more than it takes away. You and up to three friends (if you’ve got the Expansion Pak) hack through seven fantasy worlds—three of which are totally new—while Skorne’s minions try to swarm you at every turn. The hub world setup is nice because you can bounce between levels instead of grinding through them in order, which keeps the pacing from feeling stale.
The character roster got a serious upgrade from the arcade version, with four new heroes joining the original crew. I usually went for the Valkyrie—her spin attack clears rooms fast—but the Jester’s weird magic grew on me after a few runs. And yeah, your characters actually level up this time, which makes the Controller Pak save feature a lifesaver.
They didn’t just slap the arcade levels onto the cartridge either. The lighting’s better, puzzles are reworked (good luck cheesing them if you memorized the coin-op version), and the cutscenes after beating a world add some much-needed story between all the chaos. Still feels like Gauntlet at its core though: grab keys, hoard chicken, and murder everything that moves before it murders you first.
