Gee Bee came out in 1978 from Namco, back when arcade cabinets were simple and focused on a single, clear idea. It was part of that early wave of games that tried to build on the success of Breakout, but it had its own distinct personality right from the start. You weren't just breaking blocks; you were dealing with a much more unpredictable playing field.
You control a pair of paddles at the bottom of the screen, bouncing a ball to destroy all the blocks above. The signature mechanics are the sloped side walls that curve the ball's trajectory and the dangerous bumpers in the center of the playfield that send the ball careening in random directions. The pacing is frantic; you're constantly adjusting, trying to anticipate the ricochets while making sure the ball never gets past your paddles. It feels like you're trying to contain pure, joyful chaos.
