Ghost Pilots came out in 1991 as an arcade release from SNK, a company better known for its fighting games. It was part of that wave of early 90s shooters where you sat in a cockpit cabinet and tried to survive on a single credit. You control a fighter plane, moving it in eight directions to shoot down enemy aircraft and ground targets across several themed stages. The main goal is to clear each screen of enemies while avoiding their projectiles, then defeat a large boss at the end of the stage. Two key mechanics include collecting power-ups that upgrade your main weapon and a limited supply of screen clearing bombs for emergencies. The pacing is relentless, with enemy patterns that require quick reflexes and memorization to navigate. It feels like a constant test of your ability to stay calm under heavy fire.
