Game Overview

Gionbana is one of those SNES games that makes you wonder how it slipped under the radar. It’s got this weird, moody vibe—like if someone took a bunch of old ghost stories, threw in some razor-sharp swordplay, and cranked the pixel art to "hauntingly gorgeous." You’re slashing through yokai in dimly lit villages, dodging floating heads, and praying you don’t run out of magic before the next boss.

The controls are tight, but don’t expect any hand-holding. You’ll die. A lot. But there’s something about the way the lanterns flicker or how that one enemy suddenly peels itself off the ceiling that keeps you hitting continue. And that soundtrack? Pure 16-bit spookiness, the kind that sticks in your head long after you turn it off.

It never made it outside Japan, which is a shame—but if you’ve got a soft spot for tough-as-nails action games with a side of folklore, this one’s worth tracking down. Just maybe play it with the lights on.
