Gladiator Begins came out for the PlayStation Portable in 2010, developed by GOSHOW and published by Aksys Games. You control a custom gladiator fighting through various arenas to earn your freedom. The main goal is to survive each match, improve your gear, and build your reputation with the crowd and your lanista. Key mechanics include directional-based combat where you aim high, mid, or low attacks to break an opponent's guard, and a morale system where the crowd's favor can turn the tide of battle. Between fights, you manage equipment, accept missions, and interact with characters to unlock new opportunities. The pacing is deliberate, with difficulty that spikes if you neglect training or choose the wrong gear. It feels tense and physical, like every swing and dodge actually matters.
