Game Overview

Golden Goal was a 2000 Game Boy Color release from developer Denki and publisher Ubisoft. It arrived during a period when handheld sports games were often simplified, but this one tried to pack a surprising amount of tactical depth into its small cartridge.

You control a team of five players on a top-down pitch, passing the ball and attempting to score against an opponent. The main objective is to win matches by outmaneuvering the opposing team's defense. Signature mechanics include a stamina bar that depletes as you sprint, forcing you to manage your energy, and a sliding tackle that can be risky but effective for stealing the ball. The pacing is quick, and the AI provides a decent challenge, especially on higher difficulty settings. It feels satisfying to string together a series of passes and finally break through for a clean shot on goal.
