Gravitar came out for the Atari 2600 in 1988, a late release from Atari themselves when the system was already fading. It was a port of their 1982 arcade game, and on the 2600 it felt like a serious, almost punishing space challenge among simpler titles.

You pilot a small, triangular ship through a series of solar systems, clearing planets of enemy bunkers by shooting them while fighting intense gravity. The main goal is to destroy all enemy installations in each system, but the real challenge is managing your thrust and fuel while navigating tight caverns and avoiding deadly gravity wells. You explore screen by screen, often descending into planet interiors where one wrong move sends you crashing. The pacing is deliberate and the difficulty is steep; it demands patience and precision. Controlling your ship against those relentless gravitational pulls creates a tense, almost claustrophobic feeling.
