You control Gizmo, navigating through the multi-level Clamp Center to rescue Billy and Kate. The gameplay involves moving screen by screen, avoiding traps and fighting off the various gremlins that spawn. You collect random items that appear, like a bow and arrow or a tiny car, to use as temporary weapons against enemies. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly, especially during the boss fights against mutated gremlins.
