Gunstar Heroes came out for the Sega Genesis in 1993, developed by Treasure. It arrived during a time when the console was full of straightforward action games, but this one stood out for its sheer energy and inventiveness.
You control one of two Gunstar soldiers, fighting through waves of robotic enemies to stop an empire from reassembling a powerful weapon. The game lets you mix and match two weapon types at a time, like a homing shot and a spread gun, which you can switch or combine on the fly. Levels scroll both horizontally and vertically, packed with large, multi phase bosses and environmental hazards. The pace is relentless, and the challenge is real, but the controls are smooth and responsive. It feels like riding a fireworks display from start to finish.
