Gunstar Heroes came out on the Sega Genesis in 1993, developed by a studio called Treasure. It arrived during a time when the console was packed with action games, but this one had a different kind of energy, a bit more frantic and unpredictable than most of its peers.
You control one of two gun-wielding heroes trying to stop an empire from reassembling a powerful artifact. The game moves you through side-scrolling stages where you run, jump, and shoot through waves of soldiers and machines. A key feature is the weapon system: you pick up two guns at a time and can either use them separately or combine them into a new hybrid weapon, like mixing a homing shot with a rapid-fire spread. The screen often fills with bullets and explosions, demanding quick dodges and smart positioning. It feels like riding a lightning bolt through a firework factory.
