H.E.R.O. came out in 1984 for the Atari 2600, developed by Activision. It was one of those games that stood out on the system, not just for its concept but for how much it managed to do with the hardware. You played as a rescue pilot, Roderick Hero, descending into a series of mines to save trapped workers, and it felt ambitious for its time.

You control Roderick, equipped with a helicopter pack, a laser, and limited dynamite. The goal is to navigate each screen-based cavern, avoid or defeat enemies like bats and spiders, and reach the miner at the bottom before your energy depletes. Key mechanics include using the jetpack for careful vertical movement, blasting through walls with dynamite to open new paths, and managing your dwindling power supply. The pacing is tense; you're always watching your energy meter, deciding whether to fight or avoid creatures, and planning each move. It feels like a race against your own resources as much as the environment.
