Game Overview

Hamster Club (Japan) is one of those weirdly delightful Game Boy Color games that makes you go, "Wait, why didn’t we get this in the West?" At first glance, it’s just hamsters—but then you realize you’re basically running a tiny rodent sports academy.

You start by picking your hamster (I always went for the chubby one with the perpetually surprised face) and then it’s a mix of feeding them, training their speed, and—yes—dressing them up in ridiculous hats before races. The tracks are these bright, bouncy obstacle courses where your hamster might suddenly get launched by a giant fan or dodge falling fruit. It shouldn’t be as tense as it is, but I’ve definitely yelled at my GBC screen when my hamster tripped over a banana peel.

The pixel art is pure late-’90s charm, and each hamster has its own dumb little personality—some are lazy, some are hyper, and one just stares into the void mid-race. If you’ve got a soft spot for oddball pet sims or just want to see a hamster in sunglasses race a hamster in a samurai helmet, this is your game.
