Hellraider was one of those MS-DOS games that came out without much fanfare, a top-down shooter that felt right at home in the era of shareware and floppy disks. I don't recall who made it, but it had that distinct early 90s vibe, all gritty pixels and relentless action. It wasn't trying to be the next big thing; it was just there to test your reflexes and your patience.
You control a lone soldier navigating maze-like military bases, clearing room after room of mutant creatures. Your main goal is survival, plain and simple, while you hunt for keycards to unlock new sections. The gameplay hinges on fast movement, careful ammo management, and a constant awareness of your flanks, as enemies pour in from doors and vents without warning. It's brutally difficult, demanding quick saves and quicker aim, but there's a raw satisfaction in holding a choke point and watching the bodies pile up. Playing Hellraider feels like being thrown into a meat grinder and asked to fight your way out, one shell at a time.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
