Game Overview

Herakles no Eikou: Glory of Heracles came out for the NES in 1987 from Data East. It was part of that wave of early console RPGs that tried to bring the dungeon-crawling and turn-based combat of computer games to a living room audience. The setting, based on Greek mythology, gave it a different flavor than the more common medieval fantasy adventures of the time.

You control an amnesiac hero who might be the real Heracles, traveling with a party to recover your identity. The game plays out across an overworld map and through towns and dungeons, with random encounters triggering turn-based battles against mythical beasts. A notable feature is the ability for characters to use both weapons and magic, and the magic system itself involves combining different elemental spells. The pacing can be slow, and the random encounter rate is high, which makes exploration feel dangerous and methodical. It feels like a deliberate, sometimes punishing journey through a world of ancient stories.
