Game Overview

Hong Kong 97 came out in 1995 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by HappySoft Ltd. It was one of those strange, unofficial releases that floated around during the SNES era, not something you'd find on store shelves. The game is set against the backdrop of Hong Kong's handover, and it has a rough, almost homemade quality to it.

You control a character who looks a bit like Jackie Chan, moving from left to right while shooting an endless stream of communist soldiers. Your main goal is simply to survive as long as possible; there's no real end, just wave after wave of enemies. The screen scrolls automatically, and you have to jump and shoot to take out foes before they reach you. A distorted image of Deng Xiaoping's face occasionally flashes on screen, and the same short, repetitive music track plays over and over. The game is brutally difficult and feels intentionally abrasive, almost like a parody of action games. Playing it is a surreal, jarring experience that leaves you more bewildered than entertained.
