Game Overview

Hoshi o Miru Hito came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, developed by Hot-B. It was one of those many Japanese RPGs that never officially made it to the West, so you had to rely on a fan translation to even understand it. It exists in that interesting space on the NES, a time when developers were really starting to push what an RPG could be, experimenting with mechanics beyond the standard Dragon Quest template.

You control a young esper navigating a ruined world, fighting monsters and a rogue supercomputer. The main goal is to explore the land, gather your party members, and ultimately confront the source of the chaos. Its signature mechanics include a unique ESP-based combat system where you use psychic powers instead of traditional weapons, and you explore the world screen by screen, uncovering its secrets. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty can be unforgiving, especially with some cryptic progression points. Playing it feels like slowly piecing together a strange and somber dream.
