Hovertank 3D came out in 1991 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games lineup, developed by id Software. It was one of those early experiments in first-person gaming, a rough but functional attempt at 3D movement and shooting on home computers. The graphics were simple, the sound was basic, and it ran on hardware that feels ancient now, but at the time, it hinted at what was possible.

You control a hover tank, navigating maze-like levels from a first-person perspective. Your goal is to rescue hostages while fending off enemies that pop into view unexpectedly. The game uses a screen-by-screen exploration system, where each new area loads as you move through doors. Combat involves aiming and firing at blocky foes with limited ammunition, and the pacing is tense due to tight corridors and sudden enemy appearances. It feels raw and unrefined, but there's a straightforward urgency to the action that keeps you pushing forward.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
