Game Overview
Hovertank 3D is one of those early MS-DOS games that feels janky now but was mind-blowing at the time. You pilot this little hover tank through blocky, single-color corridors—no textures, just flat red or blue walls—blasting enemy vehicles before they get you. It’s basically proto-Wolfenstein, with the same chunky sprite enemies and that weird, slightly-too-fast movement speed id Software loved back then.
What’s wild is how much of the DNA from later shooters is already here: the first-person view, the frantic dodging while shooting, even the way enemies just kinda pop into existence down the hallway. Sure, it’s rough around the edges—good luck telling some of the sprites apart—but you can see the blueprint for Doom forming in real time. If you’re into gaming history, it’s a fascinating little time capsule.
Just don’t expect it to hold up like Wolfenstein or Doom does. This is more like watching a band’s first demo tape—messy, but you can hear where they’re headed.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
