Hype - The Time Quest is this weirdly charming little Game Boy Color RPG where everything—characters, monsters, even the trees—looks like it’s made of Playmobil pieces. You play as this knight named Hype (yes, really) who gets tossed through different time periods to stop some rogue god from wrecking his kingdom.
At first I thought the toy aesthetic was just a gimmick, but it actually gives the game this playful, almost dreamlike vibe. One minute you’re fighting goblins in a medieval castle, the next you’re dodging dinosaurs in the Stone Age—all with that chunky plastic look. Combat’s simple turn-based stuff, but the time-hopping keeps it interesting. Just don’t expect deep lore; the dialogue’s about as serious as a Playmobil pirate set.
Fun fact: the European version lets you play in like seven languages, which is wild for a GBC game. I tried the Italian one for kicks and Hype’s battle cries somehow sound even more dramatic.
